Regional Referendum Asked about the regional offices set up around Britain, presumably as templates for regional assemblies, in effect unelected quango's, whether now that this prospect was effectively off the agenda if the Government was content to carry on with these unelected quango's making important regional decisions the PMOS said that in terms of the detail he should speak to the ODPM but in terms of ensuring that there were important coherent regional voices that were reflected in Government that was something that would continue and indeed the Government was anxious for it to continue. _________________ Lord Hugh Cecil 1918

In plain English that means the bastards are going to have their assemblies anyway, if we won't elect them they will be forced upon us.

I guess it was only a matter of time before the euphoria stopped and fok appreciated that the RAs would remain as unelected bodies rather than elected ones.

I am surprised at the little attention that is being paid on all sides of the political divide to the unelected regional assemblies that appear to have passed everybody by in the media.
I would have thought the Conservatives would have had something to say about this. _________________ Political Correctness is a school of thought for those who lack the ability to think for themselves |

Perhaps I spoke too soon
In the Sun today:
http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2004521273,00.html
Poll rap Prezza defiant
DEFIANT John Prescott yesterday refused to scrap eight regional unelected groups despite his big defeat at the polls.
North East voters rejected his new layer of government — killing off a series of regional assemblies. Now eight unelected groups he set up when he thought he would win are left high and dry.
They can override elected planners, and cost £30million a year to run — on top of the £10million Two Jags blew on his flopped pet project.
But urged to say sorry in the Commons, he shouted: “I’m not going to apologise.” As he spoke, his South-East England Assembly revealed plans to allow 720,000 homes to be built over 20 years. That’s a rise of 130,000.
And on their editorial column:
It’s axe time
THE voters of the North East sensibly voted against an elected regional assembly.
But that smack in the eye for John Prescott means the rest of us will be stuck with the present unelected assemblies.
They cost taxpayers at least £30million a year and have hired more than 400,000 civil servants.
This is one wasteful layer of bureaucracy that no one would miss if it were axed tomorrow.

720,000 houses? That's so many. Guess they need to house all the immigrants somewhere, (and northeners because they don't seem to want to build anywhere but the S and E).
A bit odd forcing RA's on us without a referendum after the NE got one and said "no". Scared we might take after. He put it all down to the NE and was made a fool after being too cocky thinking we would all vote "yes"; this is rediculous - he can't force one on the NE, so I don't see how it'd work. _________________ - |

Do they really need to build 720,000 new houses in the south east which is already ridiculously over crowded?
England does exist north and west of the M25 as well. We need more regeneration of depressed areas in the country, especially in the north.
This can be paid for by scrapping these unelected bureaucratic "regional assemblies" everywhere _________________ Political Correctness is a school of thought for those who lack the ability to think for themselves |
